It’s a true story, and one that’s been well-documented. A funny idea at a bar one night turned into a national phenomenon, as donations of Canada’s unofficial second currency, Canadian Tire Money, came pouring in from across the country to fund the recording of a double album of Canadian Folk music.
He not only tells his story, he also recounts the stories of the donations, the history of the paper nickels and dimes that came to his door. They’re sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, and all uniquely Canadian. The story of huge bricks of bills worth a handful of dollars, collected over lifetimes.
The small stage and intimate seating of most Fringe venues lend themselves especially well to one-man shows, and Corin Raymond’s natural, low-key performance works very well. That’s not to say that he doesn’t have energy, mind you. He sings, he dances and by the end of the debut performance it was clear that he’d gotten quite a workout, but through it all he gave the impression that he’s just telling a good story to a friend over drinks.
And it’s a story worth hearing.
