From the Hamilton Herald November 26, 1921
JEALOUS MAN’S RAGE ENDS IN FATAL SHOOTING – Harry Grubb, actor shot and probably fatally injured Miss Cecilia Bartley, Actress – Turned Gun on Self – He died shortly after.
Presented by Theatre Erebus, Under the Apple Tree, a musical with a Historic Hamilton flavor, is a story of an unrequited love, a murder and the aftermath. It is performed with acute detail to actual historic events. The play recreates a musical comedy vaudeville act, that had week long run at the Lyric Theatre on Mary Street in Hamilton, in November of 1921, when stage hand Jack Grubb, shot chorus girl Cecile Bartley, and turned the gun on himself. An lively, enjoyable performance, that in my opinion was made better knowing the historical origins of the story.
The songs and music in the play were written by Darl MacBoyle and Walter L. Rosemont, who created the music for the original 1920’s vaudeville sketch UNDER THE APPLE TREE.
