On an uncharted island in the South Pacific, a lone man sits. His only companions are a bottle of scotch and a tape recorder, to which he tells his story. His name is Rufus Courland, and he is the last surviving crew member of a doomed voyage. A voyage into the unknown. A voyage into madness.
In Final Log, writer and star Jim McCaskill has created a one-man storytelling performance inspired by famed horror author H.P. Lovecraft. Based largely on his most famous work, The Call of Cthulhu, McCaskill has done well translating the oppressive, creeping tone of Lovecraft’s writing to the small stage. The minimal set and props serve their purpose well, allowing the actor to create the imagery himself. A bit more lighting work would help the production, but McCaskill does a fine job without.
Originally written in Canadore College’s Theatre Arts program, the show has already been performed at the North Bay fringe festival, and I doubt Hamilton’s appearance will be the last.
