When I listened to this track from Hamilton band Basement Revolver’s new EP Wax and Digital I thought it was about someone dealing with relationship issues.
When I looked into what guitarist/vocalist, Chrisy Hurn, really wanted to portray, I was surprised to learn that it was about her thinking about and expressing her religion in a society that may pressure her into leaving it behind. It seems the artist is trying to figure out what to do in terms of right and wrong.
The video indie rock band Basement Revolver created to accompany this track had people in it that represent those who Hurn may run into, and what they may do to try to “deceive” her.
As Hurn explains, “I want to think clearly about faith, but I am afraid that I am not able to. I am afraid that I was gaslighted into loving something that is wrong or an ugly version of something that could be good. I don’t know who I am without my past. I don’t know who I am moving forward. I wish I had a more clear answer but I don’t; I am just here.”
For a happy tune, relaxing as it is, there is frustration and confusion as to where to go next. Here’s wishing that Hurn finds ways to express herself and her faith the way she likes.
