Katie Bulley is one of Hamilton’s musical treasures and her recently released track Shadow Shadow Baby shows us why on every level.
You will want to view the amusing video for the track (see below), which is off her new self produced album Train Insane, which dropped on October 2019. The video is bursting with outstanding appearances by well-known Hamiltonians such as Mickey DeSadist (The Forgotten Rebels), Jimmy Ruffian (The Rough Go) and photographer Kyla McCall, just to name a few.
Katie has been honing her performing and song writing skills for 14 years, after buying her first guitar in 2006. Music fans will remember Katie as one of the founding members of the all-female band The Barettas.
Along the way Katie has won a Hamilton Art Award, for Emerging Artist in 2011, and a Hamilton Ontario Music Award for Roots Recording in 2014.
Train Insane is Katie’s fourth album and Shadow Shadow Baby is an upbeat rockabilly/punk gem about falling in love with someone online and stalking them.
As Katie explains, “You’re not alone if you have a crush on someone online or a crush on anyone in general. Even if you don’t want anything to happen because of your crush, it’s the feeling of the chase that’s the fun part.”
Katie’s voice is by turns sweet, strong, punk-infused and insistent as she sings with intensity, “I am your shadow baby and I’ll follow you wherever you go.”
Supporting Katie in the video are outstanding performances by a green haired Jimmy Ruffian who portrays a bored and exasperated manager who has enough of this diva. It’s worth watching the video just to see Jimmy’s facial expressions. Mickey DeSadist takes a glittery turn as a flamboyant Romeo offering a rose and not taking being spurned very well.
Catch Katie Bulley live! She’ll be performing at The Horseshoe Tavern on February 4th with Lauren Small from the Barettas and on February 14th at This Ain’t Hollywood.
