Relationships take work during the best of times and during COVID-19 when people may be separated from their loved ones, we need patience and faith to believe that everything is going to work out.
Toronto based singer and songwriter Melanie Peterson captures this wistful feeling beautifully in her newly released single ‘We Got This.’ With vocals reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Peterson’s lyrics and vocals introduce listeners to a world where hope and desire can overcome all obstacles.
To accompany the title track from her upcoming album of the same name, Peterson has produced a restful video featuring the beautiful shore of Lake Ontario. Watching the video and listening to Peterson’s lilting and calming vocals can have an effect similar to a meditation on listeners.
Peterson wrote the song in a hotel room in Edmonton on a cold winter day.
As she explains, “These three words ‘We Got This’ came to me, and the words and music began to flow. It’s a song about hope and knowing that in the midst of emotional struggle, which I feel is appropriate as we all patiently hope for the best during the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to the day we can say – we got this!”
As a folk-pop singer Peterson continues her artistic quest to explore the theme of love, emphasizing a positive message with ‘We Got This.’ Her heartfelt lyrics and straightforward delivery impact listeners as she sings, “I want to remind you now of all the love we’ve made/ We’ve got this/We’ve got so much love it hurts.”
Production values on the track are stellar. It was produced and mixed by Toronto producer/musician Mitch Girio (Emma Cook, David Newland). Peterson is on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, with Mitch Girio on guitar, Peter Collins on bass and backing vocals, Alex McMaster on cello, Jill Daley on violin and Amanda Penner on viola. The use of the stringed instruments adds a layer of depth and melancholia to the track.
Peterson’s full length album, We Got This will be released on November 13/20. Due to COVID-19 Peterson’s 2020 tour plans are cancelled or delayed. Visit her on social media for future announcements.
In the meantime … Peterson is presenting an intimate concert, A Month of Sundays, with Peter Collins on bass on Sunday, June 7th from 7 pm. – 7:45 pm. View the live-stream concert on Facebook. This is the first of a month of Sundays in June 2020, where the duo will perform original songs from previous albums, newer ones and ‘We Got This!’
