 Storytelling takes many forms and is found in many places. Monkey Biz showcases a new fiction series - Replica - by local writer, David Denis. This is the third of many parts. Some of the content could offend you. Be warned.By David Denis I cleaned the entire house the next day. I didn’t have anything else to do, so I did a really thorough job. It wasn’t made any easier by the fact that Ted kept getting in the way. After I was done I had this weird sense of self-satisfaction. I felt good about something for once. I turned the TV on and lay down on the freshly cleaned carpet and took in the smell of the fabreezed furniture. In that moment something strange happened. I looked under the couch (something I don’t do often) and I found something. It was an old pair of Sam’s sunglasses, just sort of lying down there, collecting dust. I reached out, tried to avoid the used tissues and discarded M&M’s and grabbed the sunglasses. Pulling them out from their carpeted dungeon I dusted them off with my shirt and stood up. I walked back upstairs to my bedroom and set them down on my desk next to my computer. I stared at them at the side of my bed. They reminded me why I missed her. It wasn’t the glasses, it was the way she wore them, it was the way she wore everything so perfectly. She was perfect. I want to hate her. It would make everything easier, but this was my fault and I still had no reason to hate her. I didn’t even have any reason to dislike her. I needed her back. Saturday couldn’t come soon enough. Saturday came soon enough. I drove with Ted. He gave me the directions as we went along. He likes to do things like that. We wound up at this big mansion in the middle of nowhere on a hill. I’m not kidding. It was in the middle of nowhere and it was seriously like something out of a Tim Burton movie. I don’t even like Tim Burton. I stopped the car. “Are you shitting me? This is where this guy lives?” I said to Ted. I was a little disappointed. “Don’t judge it. Of course it’s gonna be creepy, the guy makes fake girlfriends for fuck’s sake!” He had a point. I decided not to argue anymore. I sighed, grabbed Ted and carried him up the creepy driveway, to the creepy walkway, onto the creepy porch, where we rang the creepy doorbell of the creepy house. It took over 30 seconds of awkward silence before someone finally answered. The door slowly opened and from inside we could see a man with a monocle, top hat and cane. He walked with a limp and wore an old suit. One of his shoes had a large and rather visible hole in it. He wasn’t very old, but old enough that he had started to wrinkle just a little and the hair that stuck out from his hat was white and unruly. When he opened his mouth words proceeded in a slight British accent with a bit of a lisp. “Hello, you must be Kirby – and you – I already know, Ted.” Ted looked up and tilted his head toward the man to signal that I should follow him. I did. This Dr. Quigley was already the weirdest person I’d ever met and it had only been 30 seconds. |
