Glammed-Up Garage Sale Gives Back

A “glammed-up” garage sale. That is how Amie Banfield describes Mom-to-Mom sales.

Since September 2008, Banfield has been organizing these bi-annual sales, giving Hamilton moms an opportunity to buy “gently used” kid stuff - from clothing to strollers and toys - at bargain prices.

While the sales allow Banfield to give back to the community, they also raise money for the Kidney Foundation and create awareness of the importance of organ donation.

It was 17 years ago when Banfield’s mother Rhonda received a kidney transplant.  Although her brother’s organ donation meant she did not have to sit on a waiting list, Rhonda experienced kidney failure hours before receiving the transplant.

“I was 16 years old when my mom had her transplant and thought I was the only kid in the world that was going through this,” said Banfield. “It touches a lot of lives.”

She said she is fortunate there was a live donor to provide her mom with a kidney, but if more people would agree to donate their organs the waiting lists would not be as long.

Banfield hopes to make $2,000 from the sale, which she will add to the money she will be raising for the Kidney Foundation’s Give the Gift of Life Walk.  Since 2007, she has been participating in the walk alongside her mom and other members of Team Rhonda.

Banfield acknowledges it will take many shoppers to raise that amount, but hopes there will be a lineup out the door as there has been in the past.

Mom-to-Mom sales are “an absolutely fabulous place to get kids’ items at a really good cost,” said Carianne Walsh, owner of Wee Moppet Children’s Consignment Shoppe and a returning vendor at Sunday’s sale.

“When you have ... a bunch (of kids) that are really close in age the dollar doesn’t stretch as far ... especially in our economy.”

While the name suggests the sale is all about moms, it isn’t restricted to this group, said Banfield.  Along with moms selling or trading items, there will be vendors selling crafts and products such as Avon, The Pampered Chef and Mary Kay.

“You never know what you’re going to find and that’s one of the things that I love about going (to these sales),” said Walsh.
