An interesting sound by Canadian Christine Leakey on her track, “My Heart Has Been Broken By One Unfit to Name”. It’s a drawn out, droned out title that prepares you well for the song.
The track is slow moving, but captivating. She uses her voice as an instrument, drawing out her notes and words.
The video came out just after Halloween and is quite obviously inspired by the ghoulish holiday. With eerie scenes from UK film, Where the Dogs Divide Her, Leakey acknowledges the sinister Lynchian style of her video on her website.
She goes on to explain where the roots of her passion for creating somber sounds in her music comes from.
“When I was a teen, I would creep down the stairs once my family was asleep, and under dim light I would quietly play improvisational spooky mood music on my mom’s synthesizer. I was most drawn to making up somber creepy toned sounds and circus ditties on keyboards. It’s just always been this way since my Great Grandma Jones gave me her 1940s Italian chord organ.”
Leakey has been creating and practicing her music since the ripe young age of ten months old, when she learned to whistle. As an artist, Leakey seems to have never stopped developing new musical talents over the years. She has the skills to employ such a vast variety of sounds and instruments to keep the listener entranced by her song and voice.
A second LP is in the works for the artists, aimed to drop in the second half of 2014, but for now, you can get a personalized sleeve with every 7” record purchased (Leakey designs each sleeve herself, which is neat; Leakey won a Hamilton Music Award in the past for her album art). Get it here.
