In the opening monologue of The Kalamazoo Diaries, Natalie Fingerhut (Esther Arbeid) tells us that, in her opinion, the study of ancient history is the writing of fiction. The evidence is so sparse and interpretations so broad that anything before the 20th century may as well be fantasy.
An editor at a textbook company, Natalie is mourning the loss of an old friend when a coworker’s maternity leave thrusts her into the Medieval Studies Conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a real event that draws thousands of attendees every year.
Natalie confronts scholars, professors, monks and history groupies who force her to reconsider her outlook, not just on history, but perhaps her entire life. It’s all a matter of interpretation.
You have one last chance to see the play: Sunday, July 27th 2pm at Hamilton Theatre Inc., 140 Macnab St N.
