Guruguru attempts to disentangle the eternal question that has preoccupied many a poet and philosopher, by teasing out all of our accepted channels by which it is thought to be achieved. The lust of consumerism, for example, and the hunt for the perfect IKEA bookcase that can hold all 250 of your beloved books. Perhaps the practice of meditation, only don’t smile too much or they’ll think you’re crazy. The insanity and uncertainty of love, that flower-victimizing obsession with acceptance: she loves me, she loves me not. Religion, too, with its promise of eternal life is considered.
Ultimately, we are warned against the all-consuming seduction of POWER, SEX, and MONEY, that is, chasing the carrot.
Equal parts Big Bird, Zippy the Pinhead and Denis Leary, Andres Tuells delivers a powerful and engrossing performance, blurring the lines between performer and audience and pulling us into his quest for happiness. His child-like innocence shines a spotlight on the cynicism of contemporary society.
His hulking frame and booming baritone serves as a contrast to the character’s simple nature and clownish costume. In combination with the minimalist set design and simple, effective lighting, the audience cannot help but become part of the conversation, leaving us wondering, if all things are happiness why are we not already happy?
