Don’t call him a clown.
A return appearance from last year’s Fringe, Jesters Incognito is a one-man show starring and produced by Harrison Wheeler. It is presented as a series of vignettes, each featuring a character in the titular band of covert merrymakers.
Set in the world of Wheeler’s own novel of the same name, the Jesters are guerrilla entertainers, taking a stand against a despot who has seized control of the entertainment industry and forbidden the creation of any art without his own prior approval. Following the version that played last year, this isn’t a repeat performance, but one featuring a new set of characters with new stories and jokes to tell.
In between these scenes runs a slideshow of photos and comic panels set to a music loop. While this multimedia presentation is simply intended to cover a costume change, they tell a surprisingly personal story about Harrison Wheeler’s own life and his struggles with mental health.
If you missed last year’s performance, this is a must-see. If you didn’t, the new material is well worth the price of admission.
