What makes a story true isn’t a matter of facts.
Gerard Harris’ A Tension to Detail is an autobiographical monologue blending stand-up and storytelling, chronicling his life from his birth in South Africa to his life today in Toronto. He freely admits to leaving out 90% of the facts, but what remains is sharpened to a razor edge.
His frenetic, energetic delivery draws the audience in with quickfire jokes and a few scattered moments of nostalgia. When the story goes to dark places, Mr. Harris’ nervous charm and dry wit pulls us through. When the story approaches what could be told as a grand tale of heroics, he breaks it with a self-deprecating punchline.
Through everything, Gerard Harris presents himself as a humble man who happens to an interesting story to tell. It’s a story well worth hearing, and he’s the only one who could tell it.
