“‘Life’ in this ‘society’ being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of ‘society’ being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and eliminate the male sex.”
In 1967 Valerie Solanas founded SCUM, a one-woman radical organization based on the founding principle that men have ruined the world and it is up to women to fix it. The solution? Exterminate all men. Fifty years later, two college students looking for a subject for their gender studies report stumble on The SCUM Manifesto.
Creators and performers Grummett and Zacharias take us back and forth between 1967 and 2017 showing us the genesis of the manifesto and Valerie’s ill fated encounters with Andy Warhol, and the effect of her manifesto on the present day college students.
Caitlin Zacharias shines as the crude would-be revolutionary, delivering a strong and shocking and sometimes poignant portrayal of the woman who shot Andy Warhol. S.E. Grummett plays pop artist Andy Warhol and takes centre stage in the present day segments with her hilarious portrayal of the newly radicalized student.
This is a must see at this year’s Fringe. The show features nudity and coarse language and is not appropriate for children or turds.
