In 2015, the government of New Zealand held an open request for a new flag design. The old flag was a symbol of imperialism, colonial rule, and worst of all, it kept getting mistaken for Australia’s.
A designer by the name of James Gray submitted a flag with a stark black background, a frond from the local ponga tree, and a kiwi bird shooting laser beams out of its eyes (a symbol of strength, according to the designer). This patriotic image so seized the hearts of New Zealanders Imogen Stone, Zane Jarvie and Degge Jarvie that they dedicated themselves to touring around the world, spreading their own brand of Kiwi comedy.
The show is a laugh riot, featuring skits, acrobatics, audience participation and shocking nudity (thankfully separate from the audience participation). The trio’s awkward charm captures the audience’s hearts and whisks them away in a cloud of cosmic wonder, cows, and Japanese game shows, along with some surprisingly accomplished juggling.
